Laserart is an EC funded program devoted to develop Laser based non-intrusive measurement techniques for diagnostics of the state of conservation of frescoes paintings and wooden icons.

The consortium is composed by the Department of Mechanics of the University of Ancona (Italy), project co-ordinator, A.R.T.T., non-profit association affiliated to university (Greece), Ometron Ltd, manufacturer of optical instruments (UK), L.R.M.H., national laboratory for research on conservation of monuments (France) and Benaki Museum, world known institution for its collection of icons (Greece).

At present structural diagnostics of frescoes and icons fully relies on the expertise of the restorer and the typical diagnostic process is accomplished only through manual and visual inspection of the surface of the work of art. The diffusion of measurement instruments in this field is an extremely recent trend, which aims at overcoming the non-objective nature, the poor repeatability and the high cost of the present diagnostic procedures.
The whole project is conceived as a technology transfer of laser measurement techniques to the sector of conservation of works of art. This proposal has matured now because only the latest technological development of these instruments (optical scanners, IR cameras, IR parametric oscillators, etc.) allow to achieve the performance required by such application and the realization of portable prototype diagnostic systems.

We choose an immortal masterpiece as a background to stress the importance of the scientific research oriented towards the preservation of unique products of the human creativity.
